Comanche landing gear cables - February 28, 2005
I have a 1959 180 Comanche with 1865 hours TTSN. After repainting the the gear worked fine, but now, on a very cold day is stuck in the down position. One theory which will be tested in the next couple of days, is , could water from a pressure wash while stripping the gear well have worked it way up into the cable and frozen? If so, would this prevent the gear from moving? Fortunately the gear is stuck in the down position.
If the gear unfreezes, literally and operationally when put in a warm hanger, is there any good way to know you got the water out? Thanks J.R.
There is no real way of knowing what the water is doing inside the cables without permanently disassembling them. I recommend installing new conduits (gear retraction cables) as moisture has probably caused internal corrosion leading to the problem.
